Biography

John Miner worked in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and Melbourne for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian for a decade before becoming a political press secretary.
He has worked for Labor Premiers in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, and was a senior adviser to Prime Minister Keating.

He remains a member of the journalists' union and the ALP.

John is a founder of The New Institute, an association which provides a platform for ideas for the 37% of Australians who live beyond the capital cities; a member of the St James Ethics Centre; and a director of the Weeroona Association, which helps young people with physical disabilities.

John's formal qualifications are in literature, legal studies and finance - nothing directly relevant to his work, in other words.

His proudest achievement so far is bringing up two beautiful and special daughters, and he looks forward to a decade of adventure as they enter their teens.

Interests

Public policy, politics, semiotics, journalism, public relations, social justice and ethics - all romantic notions embodied in the music of Beethoven, the novels of Alexandre Dumas, and the films of Jackie Chan. And the romantically uncompromising commitment to Rugby of the Sydney University Football Club - still playing at the birthplace of the game in the southern hemisphere.
